Ian continues to be involved with many community and education projects, and this work – connecting musically with people from many different walks of life – forms a vital and ever-changing part of his practice. 

Liverpool Philharmonic: Music Mondays (2021-)

A series of sessions exploring music, and all that goes into a concert performance, for people accessing mental health services, at Music Room, Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.

Liverpool Philharmonic / Mersey Care: Living Music in Residence (2020-)

A series of online sessions for mental health inpatients, co-delivered with clarinettist Mandy Burvill. A collaboration between Liverpool Philharmonic and Mersey Care, a specialist mental health NHS trust.

Wilfred Owen Commemoration (2018)

A composition session at Christ Church Birkenhead, co-delivered with composer/horn-player Timothy Jackson, working with GCSE and A-level music students on musical responses to poems by Wilfred Owen.

Life Rooms: Journeys through Music (2018)

A series of interactive sessions exploring and creating music, at Life Rooms Southport and Life Rooms Walton, for people accessing mental health services. A collaboration between Liverpool Philharmonic and Mersey Care, a specialist mental health NHS trust.

Liverpool Philharmonic / Mersey Care: Living Music (2015-2020)

A series of interactive sessions for people accessing mental health services, co-delivered with clarinettist Mandy Burvill, at Music Room, Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. A collaboration between Liverpool Philharmonic and Mersey Care, a specialist mental health NHS trust. Sessions involve elements of composition and improvisation, and a series usually culminates in a performance that builds on material created over the sessions.

Saffron Hall / Brodsky Quartet: Selkie Songs (2015)

A week’s residency at Saffron Hall in Saffron Walden, Essex, working with a group of Year 9 students to create a collaborative piece, co-delivered with the Brodsky Quartet, soprano Sophie Grimmer, writer/director Hazel Gould and designer Rhiannon Newman Brown. North Liverpool Academy: Songwriting Project (2012)

A six-month residency at North Liverpool Academy, co-delivered with singer-songwriter Ian Prowse, working on song-writing and composition with students from years 7, 8 and 9.

RNCM / AFA Youth Club: The Darkness and the Light (2011)

A collaborative youth opera for solo voices, chorus and ensemble.
